XR for Cultural Heritage
Goethe Live 3D: Gemeinsam im hybriden Museum
… is a BMBD funded joint* research project that Sebastian Mühlhaus, founder of companion.digital, has worked on during his time with the Virtual Reality and Visualization Group at Bauhaus-University Weimar.
Hybrid museums require careful balancing of agency and guidance for their visitors.
During my time at Bauhaus-University, I designed, developed and delivered several XR experiences focused on cultural heritage to various demographics. The majority of visitors in these experiences were first-time users.
To build trust and confidence in an XR system, novice users require time to adapt to the immersion of the medium, as well as any interactive capabilities they are given. Individual setup time prevents collaborative interaction, exploration and knowledge transfer, which are the main qualities of effective social XR museum tours.
Consequently, creating effective guidance features is key to encourage user confidence and increase the users' capacity to actively engage with a collaborative XR museum experience.
